The Beginning
In 1997 Kevin and Sally Farrell and their family began developing a 2.5
hectare (5 acre) vineyard on their 8 hectare block of land 10 Km north of
Griffith, New South Wales.
The district had become famous for botrytis wines since the first commercial
wine of this style was produced by a local winery in 1981.
Our Goal
With a passion for botrytis wines, Kevin decided that they should set the
goal of producing a great botrytis wine.
Kevin was the principal of a rural K-12 school situated 85km from their
small farm and Sally worked as an administrative assistant to teaching staff
in the school.
Planting took place in October 1997 and by January 1998 the vines had
reached the topwire and were beginning to be trained along the wires.
Friends were amazed!
Our Name
We chose "Val d'Or" ("Valley of Gold") as the name for our company to
reflect the beautiful golden wattle bushes on the farm and covering the hills, paper daisies and canola crops which cover many fields in spring.... for the golden autumn poplars and willows along our supply
canal, for the autumn-gold grape leaves, and for the breath-taking gold and
red sunsets which are seen in the outback skies of the area throughout the
year.
